Amerigroup Laundry Day Addresses Critical Needs in Taylor

It’s easy to take clean clothes for granted — until you have to live without them.

Clean clothes open up opportunities and contribute to a sense of dignity. For people suffering from extreme disparities and hardships, they provide reassurance.

And they’re vital to health. They stave off germs, bacteria, dirt, fleas, mites, and other irritants. They contribute to healthier childhood development. And they help address self-esteem issues, absenteeism, poor grades, and high dropout rates.

In all of these ways, clean clothes weave into Amerigroup’s mission of improving lives and communities by taking a more holistic approach to health and helping individuals overcome barriers. That’s why we support events like Laundry Day at the Skyline Laundry in Taylor.

On the evening of March 1, we collaborated with Skyline and others in the community to open the laundromat to the community. Residents from across the community were invited to wash and dry clothes at no cost (including detergent and dryer sheets, which were also provided).

“On average, it costs about $6.20 per load to do laundry at a laundromat. That can be a big expense for families struggling to make ends meet. And if that’s where they decide to save money, there can be serious consequences.”

Rogelio De Leon, Amerigroup Relations Representative

Amerigroup turned Laundry Day into a pop-up health fair, posting English- and Spanish-speaking community outreach representatives at the event. They offered information about free services and programs helping community members meet basic needs and access essential services for food, housing, education, employment, transportation, childcare, financial supports and more. They also provided information about accessible healthcare services and help navigating the Medicaid redetermination process.

“These kinds of community-based efforts are crucial. They meet people where they are, help families and communities meet needs, and provide information that can preempt health problems down the road,” said Greg Thompson, President of Amerigroup Texas. “By empowering individuals, these efforts are working to help lift entire communities. They’re fundamental to our work in Texas, supporting a brighter, healthier, and more equitable future.”
