Customizing Healthcare to Meet Patients’ Needs

home pharmacy delivery

Medication nonadherence — when patients don’t follow their doctors’ and pharmacists’ instructions in taking prescribed drugs — is one of the nation’s biggest healthcare challenges. It affects nearly half of patients with chronic diseases, creating further health complications. And it leads to more than 100,000 preventable deaths and $100 billion in preventable medical expenses every year.

Amerigroup is working with ZipDrug, a patient-centered approach to personalized pharmacy care, to address this problem and help Texas Medicaid members get healthy and stay healthy.

“Medication adherence is one way to manage the disease process. It helps reduce the effects of the disease and improve overall health and quality outcomes.”

Dana Muncy, Director of Quality Management, Amerigroup

ZipDrug was recently discussed in an op-ed in the Austin American-Statesman. As Pinkal Patel, a San Antonio pharmacist, put it:

“These programs also keep patients out of emergency rooms, playing a vital role for communities and taxpayers. According to the Centers for Disease Control, hospital care accounts for the largest share of personal health care expenditures by far — nearly 40%. Keeping patients out of the hospital is good for patients and their families, and it keeps health costs down.”

How It Works

ZipDrug works with physicians and pharmacists to identify the unique challenges members face in adhering to prescriptions, then teams up with high-quality, independent pharmacies to address those issues. The process is built on four pillars:

  • Free hand delivery
  • Medication reconciliation
  • Compliance packaging
  • Medication synchronization

Why It Matters

Such patient-centered care is core to Amerigroup’s work in Texas, and we’re always looking for opportunities to advance that care. ZipDrug leverages relationships between patients and pharmacists to support them both.

“As my patients’ pharmacist, I know when their medication should be refilled and when and how they need to take it,” Patel said. “Pharmacy Benefit Manager programs such as ZipDrug help me help them.”
