Amerigroup Connects Struggling Texans with Resources They Need

Amerigroup Texas is upping its on-the-ground presence across the state, connecting people with a wide spectrum of free and low-cost services that improve health, strengthen communities, and help Texans respond to challenges that built up through the pandemic and financial crises.

This summer, Amerigroup reopened walk-in offices in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio. We also hosted multiple special events in both Houston and San Antonio open to the entire communities, not just Amerigroup members.

See Spanish-language coverage of the Houston events on Univision and Telemundo stations.

At the events — and every day at the storefront offices — we answer questions about health coverage options and connecting people with a wide range of services addressing things like food insecurity, housing costs, utility payments, childcare and transportation.

“For more than two years, Texans and Texas families have been struggling. There are so many resources to help and support these Texans, but it can be a little overwhelming to figure out everything that’s out there and how to access it. Amerigroup is proud to connect people with programs and organizations that will help them address the wide range of issues and drivers that contribute to health. Those connections help people get healthy and stay healthy.”

Greg Thompson, President and CEO, Amerigroup

In addition to our deep experience and connections in Texas communities, Amerigroup offers our Community Resource Link. This important tool helps people search for free or low-cost services by zip code.

The Community Resource Link identifies a wide range of existing programs that can help Texans, including:

  • Food pantries, community gardens, and healthy meal programs;
  • Healthcare and exercise programs;
  • Utility, phone and internet bill assistance;
  • Foreclosure counseling and home buyer education;
  • Safety-related home repairs and upgrades;
  • Housing and transportation assistance;
  • Legal aid; and
  • Job training and placement.

For example, the Community Resource Link shows that there are more than 2,600 free and low-cost services programs in San Antonio’s 79223 zip code area alone offering food, housing, work, education, transportation, healthcare, legal and financial resources.

In addition, Amerigroup’s storefront offices provide a physical presence in the communities we serve. Our team members answer one-on-one questions and help people navigate Texas’ Medicaid system — an especially important role as the Public Health Emergency around the pandemic lifts. That includes answering questions about coverage, eligibility, applying for benefits, and recertifying to continue receiving benefits.

“The last two years have taken a big toll on Texans lives, livelihoods and loved ones,” Thompson said. “We want to make sure they have the help they need.”
